At The Start
STOIX Co-founder Rory McDermott first supported David Kyriacos through his appointment as Head of FP&A for Skanska 2014. Rory subsequently supported him as his career progressed across threee companies appointing five people into leadership roles.
Following Skanska, David subsequently became CFO at Bring Energy, a PE-owned business that had recently been acquired as a carve-out. Rory helped him recruit a Financial Controller and a Transactional Finance Leader, whose remit covered high-volume processing, the transition to a new system and transformation alongside the team’s day-to-day responsibilities.
How The Partnership Evolved
David first experienced Rory’s approach as a candidate. After Rory helped him secure his role at Skanska, he turned to him to recruit for his own team. That relationship continued as David’s responsibilities grew and he moved to Bring Energy.
Through successive assignments, Rory built an understanding of David’s working style and priorities. He brought that knowledge to each search while taking time to understand the culture and demands of the new business.
His recommendations explained why a candidate could work, where he had reservations, and why other candidates had been ruled out. Strengths and limitations were discussed openly, so David could weigh the options with a clear understanding of the compromises involved.
Their established trust made it easier to challenge assumptions and think through decisions together. David also used Rory as a sounding board for his own career, confident that he would receive an honest opinion, even when it wasn’t the advice he hoped to hear.
